Renault Turns to the Battlefield as Europe's Carmakers Eye Defence Spoils

Renault is pushing deeper into Europe's defence build-up, unveiling a militarised vehicle developed with Thales as the French carmaker seeks fresh revenue streams amid a punishing downturn in its core automotive business.


The two companies presented a prototype, named 4 Troop, at the Eurosatory defence and security fair outside Paris this week. Built on the Renault Rafale SUV rather than a purpose-made military chassis, the vehicle is fitted with Thales secure communications and its Combat Digital Platform, transforming the hybrid 4x4 into a mobile command post capable of deploying and coordinating aerial and ground drones. It can also feed power to equipment in the field.


The pitch rests on speed and cost. By adapting a civilian platform, Renault argues it can slash the logistical and maintenance burden of conventional military trucks, since fleets plug straight into existing service networks. Only limited retooling of existing production lines would be required, and the group says it could answer a production order from early 2027.


Chief executive François Provost framed defence as an opportunity rather than a firm commitment, noting that no military revenue targets feature in the business plan running to 2030. Yet he was blunt about the appeal of automotive methods, observing that the industry can deliver in twelve months rather than the decades typical of defence procurement. Renault is also developing a drone with Turgis Gaillard and working with Belgium's John Cockerill on early-stage projects.


Investors welcomed the move, sending Renault shares up around 4.5 percent, among the strongest performers on the CAC 40, though analysts cautioned the rally owed as much to broader market sentiment as to the partnership itself.


The diversification underscores how France, preparing its industrial base for the possibility of high-intensity conflict by 2030, is drawing carmakers into the rearmament drive.
