  • 70 EU-wide projects will share over €600 million ($696 million), with €51 million earmarked for hydrogen refuelling and green maritime fuels.

  • 38 new hydrogen refuelling stations and 24 ports with ammonia bunkering and onshore power supply will help accelerate zero-emission freight corridors.

The European Union has awarded over €600 million ($696 million) in grants to accelerate the rollout of zero-emission mobility infrastructure across 24 member states, with €51 million going directly to hydrogen and maritime decarbonisation projects. The funding comes from the Alternative Fuels Infrastructure Facility (AFIF) under the EU’s Climate, Infrastructure and Environment Executive Agency (CINEA) and supports 70 projects under the trans-European transport network (TEN-T). “This significant EU support for public and private organisations will accelerate the transport sector’s transition toward a sustainable future,” said Paloma Aba Garrote, CINEA Director.

The hydrogen portion of the funding includes the deployment of 38 new hydrogen refuelling stations for cars, trucks, and buses. On the maritime side, 24 ports will gain green fuel infrastructure such as ammonia bunkering and Onshore Power Supply (OPS), essential for enabling cleaner ship operations. The rest of the €600 million package will fund more than 3,500 electric vehicle recharging stations, including over 2,000 high-power chargers for heavy-duty trucks and 1,000 fast chargers for light vehicles, plus infrastructure to electrify operations at 16 airports.

With this latest call, the EU has now allocated more than €2.5 billion through AFIF since 2021 to alternative fuels infrastructure. However, CINEA also confirmed that the third cut-off under the 2024–2025 programme is now cancelled due to funding exhaustion. A revised work programme and new calls for proposals are expected in the coming months. This AFIF round supports goals set under several EU regulations, including AFIR, ReFuelEU Aviation, and FuelEU Maritime, all designed to decarbonise transport and reduce infrastructure gaps for clean fuels.
